Terrible company to deal with!!!!!

Holland America Line - Terrible company to deal with!!!!!

They do not respond to customer requests ( or answer the telephone). Worst customer service on this planet.

Apparently 2 hours not not an unreasonable amount of time to be kept waiting on the line to speak to a representative? I was ASSURED on three separate occasions by three different operators (not from Guest Relations) that I would be transferred to a guest relations person only to be put back into the call waiting queue or disconnected.

I have had EXACTLY the same (lack of) response from these people. I am now into my 130 day wait on a refund that was promised within six weeks - THIS COMPANY DOES NOT HAVE ANY CUSTOMER SERVICE / GUEST RELATIONS!

I am having the same experience! Customer service is non existent.

You can't even find a live person to start your complaint. The email they want you to send is replied to without even addressing your complaint.

Bingo. Guest Services and management don't respond to emails /phone calls.

One email I sent to management (wouldn't call me) and got a sorry this is it policy disclaimer refusing to allow me to cruise in 2024 and use my cruise credits. I suggest everyone who has issues, look online notify BBB, Yelp, cruisecritic etc to alert others. From a cruise that overall was pretty good, to the fact that customer service/guest relations wants nothing to do with their previously loyal customers is telling.

It's like buying a product, you can buy something that looks good, but if the business doesn't stand behind their product, and opts to ignore the customer, gets people who won't give the business any future $, and will pass the word along to others. Boy am I learning about Holland America fast.

Poor experiences on Westerdam and Noordam 2024

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Holland America Line - Poor experiences on Westerdam and Noordam 2024

Beyond the age of these two ships we found so many issues that we made a very long list of items during the two back-to-back cruises. We are now 4-star Mariners and have enjoyed a long and (prior to these sailings) impeccably perfect stays with HAL.

They have changed/dropped many of our favorite perks and the Nav App they are using is flawed in many ways, not least of which is not being integrated with the spa. However, beyond the fairly shabby condition of the ships, our overriding issues are with a serious reduction of their historically awesome service, the number/price of surcharges, the lack of availability of food 24/7 and the HORRIBLE Lido food.

There were numerous logistics issues which caused delays, frustrations and cancellations of shore excursions which we felt were inexcusable. There ARE some good things such as the spa staff, the generally excellent entertainment, and the guest lecturers.

Misrepresentation.

Dear C.E.O.

I am writing to you regarding the cruise my husband and I went on. This cruise was a once in a lifetime holiday for us as the cost was very high.

I gave up smoking 10 years ago and the money I saved contributed to the cost which was £17`078 a grand some of money which we have never spent before or will ever spend again on a holiday. The ship wasnt massive by todays standard which was lovely. The staff on this ship were a great tribute to your company. Nothing was to much trouble, always happy, always smiling which was just the job on a holiday.

Why am I writing to you, well, we purchased this holiday for one reason only that we would be visiting Bora Bora, a dream I have held since the age of eighteen, which is a good few years ago.

We were never told the ship was continuing to cruise onto New Zealand which is second on my bucket list, which was quite sad we would miss being so close. We paid the final balance on 21/05/23. Then to our utter devastation received an email after all money was paid from HAL to say the ship was not stopping at Bora Bora and loosing a overnight stay. I immediately telephoned Iglu to ask why this was and they could not tell me why and I also telephoned HAL and again they did not give me the reason.

So imagine how we felt when we found out the in fact HAL had known months before we booked 13/07/22, that from the 1st January 2022 no cruise ships over 1200 passengers were allowed to dock and the Noordam has 1900 passengers. My husband and I received a letter from HAL to our cabin that we would be given $500 between us as a onboard spend the day before we disembarked! equivalent to £400. This was given after a discussion with a member of your staff on Noordam that was organised by a lot of English passengers after hearing a lot of other nationalities had already received refunds of varies amounts.

When we asked for said amount to be put into our chosen bank we were told that the letter we received to tell us about this £400 was a typo.

On this cruise the disappointment did not end at not visiting Bora Bora which was the ultimate heart break we were unable to visit Kiritimati also, hearing that the ship arrived at low tide (I have no proof of that) but the non visit was due to high swells, the sea didnt look that way though. This island looked an amazing place to visit, a few guests told us that they have been on four cruises with this island on their itinerary but in fact none of them actually made it.

It took two weeks for the internet to work as a new satellite was installed on our sailing day causing a two hour delay to our first sail away but thats ok we are on holiday. No internet was very annoying as we had already paid for it in our have it all package. We could not access our business emails etc.

The navigator app kept saying we were connected to the internet but we were not.

Noordam is geared up for the elderly, we are not spring chickens ourselves but we are young at heart and not all of us are retired with lots of money, we will never ever be able to afford to return to French Polynesia especially Bora Bora again unlike a lot of your passenger who had already been on cruises across the pacific and already visited Bora Bora and they will travel again through the islands on future cruises.

The entertainment needs your attention badly. The Rolling Stones lounge is the only place on board with any life but the same set repeated weekly gets very boring after three weeks and after four not worth going to at all. The two piano players were awful and the entertainment in the world stage wasnt worth it which is such a shame as the venue is wonderful, the last week everyone on the entertainments team seemed to have given up completely. And that was it, nothing else!

I do not want to learn origami or how to adult colour!!. Why you do not hold evening dancing with a DJ on the lido deck is beyond us.

Also at the beginning of the cruise various charges were applied and when I questioned this at customer services all the answers I received were and I quote this is for just in case when I inquired what they meant by this the staff at the desk could not answer that!

Your should know that a majority of your tannoy speakers do not work.

Guest Excursions, when asked about vicinity of next docking port and the nearest beaches and things to do came back with the same answer and I quote there will be a booth at the dock with all the information you need no what it was in the main part at the ports were locals selling excursions. So we had the job to find beaches etc ourselves. Not everyone can afford all your excursions.

Tender arrival to ports was hard going awaiting up to an hour to get onto a tender, this is easily rectified put more boats in the water.

Your food on board Noordam was disappointing. The Pinnacle restaurant was the best and you felt special but unless you wanted to pay extra you didnt use it. The dining room was not very impressive, had the right atmosphere and service but couldnt deliver. The Canaletto, well you should close it down as it is dreadful.

Now onto the lido market.. Breakfast is good but you have be be up early, but thats ok old people get up very early. Lunch started about 11.30am and the choice was always varied because most elderly folk have there main meals at lunchtime, but a lot of us dont. The evening meals started at 5.30pm closed on the dot at 8pm!!!

Ridiculous! not all of us are in bed by that time. The evening meal would normally start about 7.30pm for your young at heart passengers, but if you arrived after 7.30pm the closing down process had started and the selection was dire which on a five week cruise isnt acceptable. The only fruit available most days were apples and melon.

We spent more than a few evenings, as did many others in our cabins which on a £17078 holiday we certainly never expected to be doing that mainly because of the entertainment or lack of it.

£400 as a pay off for your misrepresentation of this cruise is not acceptable.

You lied to us and to many others, but this holiday cruise of a lifetime caused more stress instead of relaxation. Knowing you were not taking your passengers to the highlight of their cruise but taking the money for it is an absolute disgrace.

I am speaking for my husband and myself and we look forward to your response and compensation.

Yours sincerely

Mandy and Neville Cornish

Poor management of cancelled port pre-cruise

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Two weeks before Christmas we were informed that our second port in a 22 day South America / Antarctic cruise was cancelled due to operational issues; another port would be added on the Chile side and all other ports would be moved a day earlier. However, two weeks later, there was still no guarantee that the previously booked excursions could be transferred to the new scheduled dates; we were not able to use the ap to change anything during that time.

After researching possible independent tours and running into lack of options, we decided to cancel 30 days out. Just didn't want to spend that kind of money with no guarantee of seeing that part of the world. We did have insurance, but still got dinged 10%, which was a LOT of $ as it was a very expensive, once in a lifetime cruise for us. We have booked another cruise to NZ next January, hoping that would be considered favorably vs taking the full allowable refund, but we were still docked 10%.

On previous HAL cruise out of Seattle that had to turn around due to a "small fire in the engine room" while still in Puget Sound, we missed a port leaving a day late, of course Sitka, the reason why book that particular cruise. In that case HAL offered $200 cabin credit and 25% of what was paid toward a future cruise, which we used a couple years later. It made it more bearable. But this, we are frustrated as would be 4 time HAL cruisers to lose so much money in penalties, even with insurance.

If handled like the Alaska situation, simply missing a port and offering some compensation and not the nightmare of trying to rebook 1800 passengers so close to departure, we may have not cancelled.

We are hopeful the New Zealand cruise won't have any issues. Not sure we will attempt to try South America and Antarctica again.

Told most of the 2,500 passenger to arrive at the same time causing a four hour wait on line in the hot sun to board the Koningsdam in San Diego November 25 2023. No representatives from Holland America addressed the line to explain the delay, brought us water, or offered assistance to the MANY elderly and infirmed passengers. We were also caught in that travesty of boiling for 4 hours on that black top. My 83-year-old friend Dorothy was near heat stroke and was under the Koningsdam's medical team's care the remainder of the ten day cruise to the Mexican Riviera.

I'm 91 and was left to drag four suitcases inch by inch for those interminable hours. The trip was ruined for us as we were bent on several of the excursions--which we couldn't take.

No assistance from Holland America during that long wait. I give them NO STARS, and haven't heard one word from them

"Have it all" price

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Hi

I have been on four previous Holland America cruises and was thrilled to see the itinerary for a 21-day cruise on the Rotterdam for Aug. travelling from Rotterdam to Norway, Iceland and Scotland.

It looks exciting!

On March 6, I booked it through Vacations to Go. At that time, Monty, the agent, told me I could add the "Have It All" beverage package for $1890 US but since it was a new idea to us, I decided to talk to my husband and see if we wished to add this. I then called back March 12 to add it. Monty was not available and was off Mar 14to 16, so we finally connected today, March 18.

I did not think there was a rush. Today, the price suddenly jumped 22% to $2310! Wow!! That was unbelievable because when he told me I could book any time before the cruise; I assumed he meant for the same price!!

I feel this was unfair and am hoping you can override this and give me the price I was told on Mar 6.

Please let me know.

I can be contacted at 905-357-**** or camstar4@***l. (Canada) Thanks

From the discusting food, serve daily same at the Lido,or the restaurant,we have never seen such a terrible menu, food you could not choux

And especially at the lido having 5 days of Pork Belly.

Nothing dicent to eat At Christmas or New Years.

Stupid comedians, and a singer? That was terrible.

We where told NO CHILDREN 65 AND OVER,so what happen to that? Why Children on ship??

We paid lots of $$$to have ourselves a great cruise but it was quite a disappointment.

Maybe you should start training your cooks how to make dicent meals.

The only place we enjoyed it was the steak house,nd nothing else, what a waiste of our time,$$$,and so much for a Holiday cruise.

Last of 8 cruises w/HA on Eurodam Oct.8,2022

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Cruise was 10-08 to 10-29, Panama canal. It was April 11,2023 before I had any response from HA.

Many problems with cabin, service, etc. Injured left foot and ankle on raised floor tile in the Lido. All of this is documented onboard and in my daily journal. From 4-11-2023 to Today 2-7-24 dealing with Scott Gerstl, I was offered $5000.00 which does not even cover my trip expenses.

16 months of dealing with him and no compensation at all for an injury that has ruined my life, is ongoing and can NEVER be repaired per my Orthopedic surgeon and Podiatrist. MRI showed 4 fractures, torn tendon, collapsed arch and more!!! Mr. Gerstl informed me that $5,000.00 was their FINAL OFFER and that does not even cover my expenses for the cruise.

HA even charged me for the ONBOARD medical visits and x-rays! They DO have to pay Medicare and Tricare for all hospitalizations(3), 2 boots,3 braces Dr, appts and prescriptions and many other things. Do not trust HA to do the right thing.

Princess cruises sent me a check for the $5,000.00 which I have never agreed to or cashed and won't. I am not through with this ONGOING mishandling of an accident that they were responsible for.

Terrible cruise lies and deception!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Holland America Line - Terrible cruise lies and deception!

We choose this 7 day eastern Caribbean cruise based on the itinerary.

What a joke this was.

Not till we boarded did we know the ship was broke and needed to stay at Port (ft. Lauderdale) for 2 days for ship maintenance on our dime and on our time!

So this expensive cruise just turned to 4 days!

When we went to guest services about it they only offered 250. Credit.

At this point they changed the itinerary to Nassau Bahamas.

Grand Turks, and Half Moon Cay Bahamas.

We booked the trip with excursions to go to St Martin us Virginia islands, Puerto Rico, Grand Turks and Caicos, and Half moon Cay Bahamas so they canceled half the trip!

So we had to rebook the excursions and were charged for them and when we got to port they canceled excursions.

For the 3 ports we got too they were only 3-4 hours off the ship, barely enough time, avoid this cruise.

They staff were friendly and work hard.

Customer service is not existent, they are well versed to say I'm sorry over and over!

Holland America clearly does not care after they receive your money, and they charge for everything they can. Try and get a water on a prepaid beverage package!

Unable to do post cruise due to Covid-19 booked through Holland America Cruise lines. Both hotel in Vancouver and airline approved a refund $1589.00 to me from Holland America who retained the money.

Holland America repeatedly refused a refund. Called BBB in Seattle (Holland home), found it was not a member and was non-responsive with an "F" rating. Holland America's reply: no refund and moreover it discontinued Covid-19 claims after Jan. 2023.

Additionally a number of my fellow passengers also came home with Covid-19. Beware Holland American cruises it makes no mention of possibility of contracting Covid,-19 nor that it will not reimburse or compensate you for your monetary loss.

They cancelled two ports for no reason

Holland America Line - They cancelled two ports for no reason
I was on a cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Montreal. Bar Harbour, Maine had enacted port restrictions that were removed well before our departure date. But we still did not stop there. In addition, Newport, Rhode Island was cancelled. No reason was ever given. Those were two of the three ports I really wanted to visit. They are so DEVIOUS. I spoke to others who booked their tour on Friday for a Sunday departure. After the booking, they received an email telling of the pity changes. They knew WELL IN ADVANCE of the departure. I would have cancelled if I had been allowed.

A Big Letdown- My First and Last HAL Cruise

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Ship was full to capacity which seems to be the norm now. There was a line for everything and we couldnt even find a table in the buffet for breakfast.

Not one table was available to sit and enjoy the mediocre food inside since it was raining. Lounge chairs by the pool, forget it. Heated beds in the thermal suite, always full. I thought HAL would be a good alternative to other lines since theyre known for quieter and more intimate cruises, I was very wrong.

The food lacked and sometimes was downright disgusting.

MDR food served cold hard and stale bread, shrimp cocktail with mayonnaise/aoli almost made me vomit, all the meats were tough and flavorless. The pastas were so bland, even pasta with Prego sauce is better.

Burgers were just OK. Pizza was bland and flavorless. The cheese and toppings would just flop off when you pick up a slice.

Bar service was slowest Ive seen on any line.

There were at most two bartenders serving overcrowded bars on every part of the ship, some bars were not even open. Also the drinks just didnt taste good. My margarita, no ice. My pina colada was confusing and I couldnt finish it.

The drink package youll find doesnt cover many drinks entirely.

You should expect to pay an additional minimum of 50 cents per drink for a pina colada or pain killer cocktail after already spending $400 for a weeks drink package.

Oh and the limit is 15 drinks/day which INCLUDES ANY DRINK such as coffees or sodas so beware of that.

The nice cafe to get an espresso or latte serves a nice breakfast, OH AT 11AM!!! Dont expect to get breakfast there, unless you want breakfast for lunch.

Your sailing programs list on board credit perks such as a $100 credit for teachers! My travel agent Suzanne Berish of Jim Lynch Travel and Tours has repeatedly tried to enable this credit to myself and my sailing companions who have likewise been teaching for 30 years!

We have provided all manner of proof to something called Sheer ID with most cases do not even receive an answer to our inquiry!
